keeping a reptile? They don't purr like a cat, they are not loyal like a dog, they are not cuddly as a bunny, they don't make you laugh like a hamster, they don't sing like a bird?
I am by no means saying that reptiles are not cool, but I just need to understand why a snake, a gecko, a spider, a lizard makes good pet.
Thanks~!
What kind of satisfaction do you get from?
It depends on what each person looks for in a pet. I keep reptiles, and I am contect just seeing them happy and cozy in their home.
I have snakes because they are just plain awesome :) I love the way they behave, look, and interact with me. They are also interesting to feed, it really never gets old. My leopard geckos are ever so cute, and very tame.
Gernerally, they are my babies. It doesn't matter that they aren't affectionate in a direct way. They depend on me to live, and maybe those are just my maternal instincts, but I love keeping them in my home.
Many people, although not me, just admire the species so much, they want to be as involved with it as possible. Not as a pet, but as a living creature with certain needs. Most reptiles are not great to handle, so ideally people aren't interested in having so much of a "pet" as a beautiful animal in their home.
However, not all reptiles are so inactive. My blue tongue skink for example, spends most of his day out of his enclosure, sliding around underfoot in his room. Through this freedom, he has learned to come to certain sounds (on command). He is also litter trained, and will attempt to climb up your leg to show that he wants to be picked up. He is incredibly docile, and seems to enjoy it when I take him out for walks (while I hold him, not on a leash or anything!). And, in the end of the day, there is nothign he likes better than a good back and head rub.
Reply:They are wild and still have all of the instincts of their species. They are dangerous and scarry to some people.
They will never "love" their owner but saying that, some seem to "like" their owners. I own a Savannah Monitor and she has a voice, when she is angry she hisses when she is happy she makes a sound deep in her mouth. So I would say people have them beacuse they dont want the normal (dog/cat/fish) they want to be special and odd. Also reptiles really dont need you to be their for them if you go on a trip throw in a few crickets and they will be fine.
Reply:Reptiles can be beautiful, they can have an unusual or interesting appearance, and their behavior is entertaining to watch. There is satisfaction to be had from keeping an animal healthy and happy, so that it thrives in your care--with some species it can be a challenge, making it even more rewarding.
There is even the possibility that an observation you make, or an idea you have that aids in reptile care, could one day be used to improve conditions for other reptiles (or their keepers), or even aid in the captive care and reproduction of an endangered species.
Reptiles inspire a sense of wonder. Much of the satisfaction from owning one is the same satisfaction one gets from keeping fish. Like reptiles, fish do not appreciate their keeper's efforts other than by being healthy and behaving naturally, but they are a joy to watch.
Even in simpler animals which have smaller brains (such as fish and reptiles) there is some learning capacity, and limited emotions. Each individual possesses a distinctive personality. Therefore, we can get to know them as individuals, too, and marvel at how different they can be from one another. They CAN make us laugh, and we can love them, even if they will never love us back.
Reply:Most of my collection is cornsnakes. I have a few boas and small pythons and a couple of kingsnakes. I'm also fairly new to reptile keeping (less than five years).
Beyond the fascinating variation, even among snakes with the "same color," I was surprised to notice the wide variety of personality differences among the collection. The mental activity involving breedings and genetics is just another thing I enjoy about my reptiles.
Then, there's the basic cool smoothness of their bodies when I handle them.
As for the fascination with spiders ... you got me. They creep me out a little as far as pet-potential goes. :)
Reply:We rescue everything under the sun. We have fish dogs cats birds horses goats sugar gliders and right now a snake.
To us just helping a animal is satisfaction enough and sometimes we help their owners if they can't take care of them any longer.
I think fish and reptiles and pleasing to watch and enjoy and I find them relaxing. I was abused as a child and always had at least a snake and a few fish and they are what kept me sane. They can be loving in their own way and I rarely have problems with them like I have with my dogs cats and even horses.
I don't by any means think any animal should be taken from the wild. That is why I will never go to a petshop and buy a fish or any reptile many are still plucked out of the wild....
Reply:i think its because they are different, most peple have cats etc but not many have reptiles, theyre just cool really, you can pick them up play with them, and they have personalities just like any other pet, none are the same, my corn snakes all act differently and my bearded dragons are very tame and love being handled and crawling over my hands, also i think they are nice to look at, if the viv (tank) is set up nicely with maybe a desert or jungle effect it can look very nice in a room, also they arent as messy as dogs and dont require as much day to day care as cats
Reply:they are usually lower maintenence i like the fact they don't need lots of affection like a dog or cat no fur is nice if you have allergies they do have personalities and do lots of neat things i got a 4 ft iguana a week ago that roams the house and he walked up to my 4 year old girl who was playing on the floor and licked her toys it was cool he also was playing with a balloon kinda nipping it to make it move and chasing it i have 5 lizards and a spider and i enjoy them all
Reply:They are interesting and unique. I enjoy my reptiles differently than I do my dogs, cats or birds. I like providing them with the best care possible and watching them grow and thrive. To me they are beautiful! :)
Reply:reptiles do not have voices sorry.
Reply:well in my life experience, keep reptiles is the coolest thing to do cause they are just like you have said, they are different from other kind of pets.
keeping a snake may not necessary need a big space, except for phytons and boas. most of them usually need not much time to clean the cage, and to do so it just takes once a week, 10 minutes per cage. some of them are fierce but not all are the same. they are easily kept and the food expenses is also not really expensive, depends where you get the supply.
as for geckos, is about the same. but the space they require is also relative small and they can some times fun to play with too. they are easy to breed, kept and accompanied.
as for spider is the coolest thing that you can bring them anywhere in your small box hanging around your waist. they are harmless to human even though they have venom. tarantula is save to playing with but not black widow.
lizard is beautiful with their colour especially when they are in mating season. they are nice to look and some are nice to hold in your arm as well. they will crawl on your body and for the time being with practice, they will stay calm with you.
i believe there are people out there will give your variety of their definition of satisfaction to rear reptiles cause we have found what is loss about these so call 'ugly animals'
or 'monsters'. they are just one of the creation of God like any other animals that deserves to appreciated and loved.
i have a water dragon year ago that i train him to urine and 'poop' in the toilet once i take him to bath. he lives with me in the same room without cage, and its free to roam around. i some times take him to cyber cafe not to show off but to help people to understand that this creepy crawler is harmless and friendly too. eventhough it does not feel comfortable at first but soon, as time goes he manage to fit in the activities. one thing amazing about him is there are a few times he went out of the house and we thought that he already lost but what surprising us is when 6 o'clock every evening, he will return back to my room from out side. it sounds crazy a reptile can do that but thats him, my water dragon, jimmy.
there are a lot of amazing things will happen as you rear it. you will see toward the bright side of them and one day i believe you will fall in love with them too.
hope that my words can help you to explore what you will need in the future. good day. =)
