Deep satisfaction experiencing slavery quote by fredrick douglass?

"He only can understand the deep satisfaction which I experienced, who has himself repelled by force the bloody arm of slavery."

is it true that only a “deep satisfaction” or better yet, a true understanding can come from actually going through something as horrific as slavery, or do you think that through reading about someone as brave and great as Fredrick Douglass brings us insight?

This is the reason he is still revered !! If I had a time machine or if I could have dinner with anyone it would be Abe and Freddy. You can find transcripts, but to be there would have been great.
Reply:While reading the person's account/recollections of the events can be illuminating and inspiring...I think there is merit in the idea that if you've lived through it then you can truly understand and fathom it.

Ask a woman who has experienced childbirth...she'd probably say if you haven't actually experienced it yourself...you have no idea or concept of what it's actually like.
