Dental assistants don't usually make 50k but dental hygienists may make that much :) DH's clean and scale the teeth and need to take a lot more coursework in chemistry and anatomy of the head and neck among the technical courses. I think I read somewhere recently that they make an average of around 50K. But what would they advance to? You can't take over as a dentist just by working there for an extended period of time... so it looks like you'd be stuck there.
Reply:I have been a dental assistant for 11 years in North Carolina. I make about 42K a year and work 32-38 hours a week. Pay can vary depending on the office and location. But no, there is really no room for advancement in position, only pay raises
