Managers must keep the interests of the company in mind FIRST. That being said, keeping employees happy is a HUGE part of the company's health. So they go hand in hand.





Doing "everything" they can needs to stay within the policy of the company handbook (seriously) and also build up their staff. Most of all - equal treatment to each employee. I have gotten in more bad situations because of real or percieved favoritism among my staff. Getting creative when showing that you are listening to them, care about their career goals etc is a talent - but, it also is learned thru trial and error. Employees need to earn respect but managers must provide an atmosphere where they want to.
